I personally agree with not holding tryouts right around, or directly after nationals to give the families time to relax. But let's hear your thoughts. Being that it is a Metro only policy and we have so many outlying state teams in the area how much does this affect the Metro group. Obviously the better teams will always have those who wait to make a decsion until after the big 5-6 have a tryout.
Also what good is the policy without a window? I see nothing that says when the freeze period is so if you have tryouts the day before nationals are you OK? Also this is about the 3rd year now that this has been posted and nothing has ever been done so why even go through the paces. I see a couple major teams 14U and older with tryouts posted before 8/21 would GHYSA really disqualify a team. From ETEAMZ: Houston ASA teams are governed by the Greater Houston Youth Softball Association Code. The earliest legal tryout date for Houston ASA teams is Saturday, August 21, 2010. Violators are subject to disqualification per the GHYSA Code. Please review the following section of the GHYSA Code. 9.04 ILLEGAL TRYOUTS - No team can conduct a Team Tryout until the second Saturday following the completion of the [ASA] National Championship Finals in the age the team will be participating for the next playing season. Any team meeting, practice or other function where a team invites a player not on the team’s current roster will not be allowed and will be considered a tryout.

I don't like the rule at all. If you go to Nationals then have tryouts 2 weeks later there is no time for the kids to take any time off and rest their arms. I would have the tryouts right away then give these kids 3-4 weeks off to rest. Remember they are kids and are still growing...

Yes...you see this post every year on E-Teamz, but until they enforce the rule it will be ignored. Tryouts are great, but believe me most teams are already working on the players they want! |
